Silver Star is just a short 20 min drive up the mountain from Vernon BC.

It is also less than an hour drive from the Kelowna Airport for visitors coming in by an airline.

The village at Silver Star sits in the middle of the mountain and the modern lift system is linked so that you can ski right up to your front door. This makes it truly a ski-in, ski-out resort.

The theme of the village is basd on a 1900's mining town. The vibrant colours of the buildings here make it quite the attraction.

And the music that plays in the public areas makes it very upbeat and fun.

With over 7 Meters (23 feet) of Okanagan "champagne" powder falling here each year and an average temperature of -5°C (23°F) this is a perfect winter paradise for all you cold weather outdoor enthusiasts.

    History of Silver Star Resort

    Silver Star has come a long way from a small local ski hill to its present standing as a world class ski resort that competes with the big boys.

    Here are some of the major events that have helped form this great ski location.

  • 1938 - The beginning of road constuction to Silver Star.

    - The Silver Star Ski Club is formed. This later becomnes the Sovereign Lake Ski Club which sits adjacent to Silver Star.

  • 1940 - Silver Star Provincial Park is esatblished.

    - The first tow rope is installed.

    - For 50 cents you could ski all day... just imagine 50 cents!

  • 1958 - Silver Star Sports Ltd. is formed.

    - Constuction of a day lodge begins.

  • 1959 - The first ski school is started.

  • 1964 - New T-bars replace the tow ropes.

  • 1968 - The Summit and Yellow chairs are installed at 557 m (6000 ft). This makes Silver Star one of the largest ski areas in North America.

  • 1981 - Silver Star Sports Ltd. is sold. The new owners rename it Silver Star Mountain Resorts Ltd.

  • 1983 - The Putnam Station Hotel is built.

  • 1984 - The day lodge becomes the Pinnacle Suite Resort.

    - Construction of the Vance Creek Saloon, Silver Lode Inn, Kicknillie Inn, Aquatic centre and the Administation office.

    - Nordic trails along with a Biathlon Range are built.

  • 1985 - Van Creek Hotel is added on to the Saloon (opens in 1986).

  • 1988 - The Lord Aberdeen Hotel built.

  • 1989 - The resort offers guided mountain bike tours of Silver Star and its surrounding area for the Summer visitors.

  • 1990 - A four-passenger chairlift is installed and named the Silver Queen.

  • 1991 - The Vance and Putnam Creek Express lifts are installed.

    - The Silver Star Bike Park begins development of a network of trails for downhill mountain biking.

  • 1994 - Silver Star Resort hosts the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup.

  • 1997 - The Silver Creek Hotel is constructed.

  • 2001 - The majority assets of Silver Star are purchased by the Schumann family, owners of Big White Resort in Kelowna.

  • 2002 - 10 million dollars is invested in the expansion of Silver Star Resort.

  • 2004 - Construction begins on the Snowbird Lodge.

  • 2007 - Announcement of the new Firelight Lodge to be built.

    - The Silver Queen '2' chairlift opens. This allows true ski-in, ski-out access to all of the Creeside area accommodations.

  • 2008 - Siver Star Resort and the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre are named co-hosts for the 2011 World Master's Cup.

  • 2009 - The beginning of the winter season sees the official opening of the Firelight Lodge.

  • 2011 - The 2011 World Master's Cup is started in early March.

    - In partnership with Eagle Pass Heli-skiing , heli-skiing is offered at the resort for the first time. The distance from Kelowna Airport to Silver Star makes it the closest heli-skiing to an airport in all of Canada!

    For those of you on a budget and wanting a more affordable option in accomodations there is the world-class Samesun Backpackers Hostel.

    The two residential areas, the Knoll and Alpine Meadows are where all of the Vacation homes are located. You have a choice of many different homes and condos.

    Most of them offer private hot tubs, fireplaces and fully equipped kitchens. From a small family of four to a larger gathering of people you are sure to find a place to suit your needs.

    One word of caution. Peak season usually means a low vacancy rate at the resort.

  • Bugaboos - An award winning bakery. Located on the Vance Creek boardwalk next to Snowbird Lodge.

  • HB Pizza - Pizza, pizza and more pizza! Delivery available to your hotel or condo. Located on the Lord Aberdeen Boardwalk.

  • Isadore's Cuisine - Enjoy lunch or dinner here Swiss style. Simply the best Swiss food around! Located on the Vance Creek Boardwalk.

  • Long John's Pub - Great food to enjoy with your favourite drink. This cozy pub is a great place to unwind. Located in the Lord Aberdeen Hotel.

  • Mountain Katz - Family friendly atmosphere and great selection of food here. Located at the Vance Creek Hotel.

  • Paradise Camp - Paradise Camp is the only restaurant located on the backside of Silver Star. The views are unbelievable as you overlook the Monashee Mountains in the distance. Located at the top of the Powder Gulch Express lift.

  • Silver Grill - Fine dining and great wine selection. Located behind the Town Hall.

    The Den Bar and Bistro - This place is usually hopping as it features regular live music and events. Located at the lower level of the Town Hall.

    The Saloon - The locals favourite hangout. A regular DJ and live music will make you want to get up and boogie on the biggest dance floor on Silver Star.

  • Town Hall - Perfect for those wanting to grab a quick bite to eat with a variety of snacks and meals for breakfast or lunch. Located at the Town Hall on Main St.

  • Tube Town Cantina - The place to go for a snack or light meal while taking a break from the many Adventure Park activities. Located at the Tube Town Adventure Park.

    Summer At Silver Star

    Many people are finding out that Summer is a great time to come up to the mountain.

  • Hiking Take one of the chairlifts to the top of the mountain and then take a stroll on one of the trails leading down. Check with the Star for information on their lift ticket prices.

  • Moutain Biking Many visitor's favourite activity. Ride the many trails that are marked for mountain biking. You can rent a bike or bring your own. You can also purchase tickets to Canada's largest mountain bike lift that will take you and your bike to the top of the mountain.

  • Horse Trail Rides Book a guided tour and experience a different way of travelling through the woods and the awesome views that Silver Star has to offer.

  • Geocaching This is a fun activity that is catching on with many people. This is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online.

  • Frisbee Golf This is new at the Star for the 2012 season. Grab some friends and a golf frisbee and have a blast! Located close to the RV and camping lot.

    Are you planning a wedding? Why not discover a perfect setting to perform a ceremony. There is a Summer Wedding Gazebo that overlooks gorgeous views of the Okanagnan Valley below.

    Silver Star Bike Park is open from late June to early September seven days a week.

    Summer hours of operation:

    10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Extended play every Wednesday and Friday night until 7:30pm.

    Check with the resort for special openings on some weekends during the summer season.




    The winter season for Silver Star Resort usually begins in late November (weather permitting) and runs through until early April.

    Day skiing hours - 8:30 am to 3:30 pm 7 days a week.

    Nighting skiing hours - 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm Friday and Saturday from the midddle of December to the end of March.

    To get to Silver Star resort take Hwy 97 through Vernon and turn onto 48 Ave which then becomes Silver Star Road as you start climbing the mountain.

    Silver Star is 22 km (14 mi) from Vernon and 65 km (40 mi) from the Kelowna Airport.
