Penticton Public Library

The Penticton Public Library is located in the South Okanagan city of Penticton British Columbia

It is part of a library-museum complex that sits along the popular Main street that runs through the city.

The library has provided free access to materials and services to the whole community for many years.

The motto this municipal library is that the opportunity for enjoyment, education and enlightenment is offered to all of its citizens.

Some History

As I mentioned before the library has been around for a very long time. Here are some events from its historical past.

  • Library service to the public began in September of 1909. This is when the Penticton Public Library Reading Room was first opened.
  • In 1920 the Penticton Public Library Association was formed.
  • In October of 1946 School District 14 was formed. The Library Act stated that the library automatically become part of the Okanagan Regional Library.
  •  In 1968 a referendum was held in the city of Penticton. The people voted to separate the library from the Okanagan Regional Library and it became official on April 2, 1969.
  •  A public library association operated the library until a city appointed board was established in December 1969.
  •  The library has moved to several locations over the years. Its current home at the library-museum complex has been here since 1965 when the Community Arts Centre was built.
