Okanagan Weather Simply Spectacular!
The Okanagan weather brings people back year after year, and it is usually a topic of conversation when mentioning the Okanagan Valley.
The great thing about our Okanagan weather here is that the outdoors can be enjoyed any time of the year. There are the four seasons to experience, unlike some of the other regions in
Canada.
I love it that I don't have to venture too far to spend a week or two on vacation in the summer. Most of the time my family and I travel the valley looking for a different camping spot each year.
The guaranteed sunshine and warm temperatures mean we don't have to book a vacation to some far away exotic location.
You can visit anytime from May and stay until September and you will enjoy brilliant sunshine and warm Okanagan weather most days. July and August are typically the driest and hottest months.
Perfect for soaking up the sun and experiencing all the water activities the Okanagan has to offer.
Some people might not like the heat and enjoy the cooler winter months. December until February are usually quite cool, with some days being down right cold! But this gives the Okanagan Valley its reputation for its defined seasons. Everyone has there own taste for what season is their favorite.
With typically over 2000 hours of sunshine each year, the Okanagan is definitely a sunworshipper's paradise!
Summer
The summer is when people from all across Canada and the rest of the world flock to the valley to enjoy the Okanagan weather at its finest. The beaches fill up, campsites are booked solid, and everyone is just in an all around good mood.
And why not? What more can you ask for than relaxing and having fun in the sun.
Temperatures throughout the Okanagan Valley usually top 30°C (86°F), but can go as high as 40°C (104°F) on some days in the South Okanagan. You will find that the
Osoyoos weather
is ideal for these type of temperatures as it sits in Canada's only real desert.
Nights are generally cooler, perfect for sitting by a campfire or going for a late night swim in any of the Okanagan lakes.
Are you ready for an Okanagan summer?
Autumn
The colors are alive in the fall months in the Okanagan. The leaves change color, the air is getting cooler and it signals the end to the summertime heat.
There is definitely a change in the Okanagan weather.
It really is a spectacular season. You can still enjoy the great outdoors with the weather still being nice enough for fishing, camping, and most of your summertime activities.
I find it an even better time as there are less crowds and you have better access to the Okanagan campgrounds and hiking trails in the area.
The Autumn season usually begins in mid to late September and goes until mid to late November.

Winter
Winter is a time to experience another one of the fabulous seasons in the Okanagan Valley. The winter can start any time from late November and continue until the middle of May.
No no no, I'm just kidding
It just seems its taking that long this year (late April 2009 at the time of writing this page). Actually, you can usually see a transition from Winter to Spring sometime in mid March to the beginning of April.
And of course winter hangs around a little longer in the Central and North Okanagan regions.
If you are visiting the region in the winter season make sure to check out
Kelowna weather
and I think you will agree how beautiful it is here. For all you snow lovers this is your time of year. Even when there isn't a lot of snow down in the valley bottom, there is plenty of the white stuff up in the mountains and at any of the
Okanagan Ski Resorts
in the region.
From snowboarding to skiing, from ice skating to ice fishing, there is something for everyone to participate in the winter months.
I am still amazed when driving on an area highway close to a frozen lake and see people ice fishing. Bundled up in their warm winter gear, sometimes with a little fire pit and flames sending sparks in the dark, these brave souls sit for hours and wait for their catch.
It is quite the sight!
The temperatures usually hover around the freezing mark but there are cold snaps with some days getting down as low as -20°C (-4°F) and even colder on occasion.
It is pretty rare but it does happen from time to time.
The Okanagan Valley is also becoming well known for its ice wine. Temperatures need to be below -10°C (14°F) for several days for the grapes to be ideal for ice wine making.
The Okanagan wineries usually get to harvest at least a few times in the year if we don't have an unusually mild winter.
If you haven't tasted an ice wine, you don't know what your missing. Look for some on your next trip to the Okanagan. It's absolutely delicious!
I hope to see all you snow bunnies soon enjoying an Okanagan winter.
Spring
Spring in the Okanagan Valley is truly a wonderful time of the year. The snow has melted and the days are beginning to get a little longer. And warmer, too!
The flowers start to bloom and you see more and more people looking forward to the warm and sunny days ahead. Some people are taking long walks and some are tending to their gardens.
A lot of people clean their vehicles and go for a nice, long drive. Just beware of the many deer that come down from the mountains to the valley bottom at this time of year.
The Okanagan valley is very much a wilderness region. Watch for other wildlife like bears and moose by the roadside. It is quite common to spot these animals and more as you travel through the area.
You can ski or snowboard up in the mountains in the morning, and come down and enjoy a round of golf in the afternoon. All in one day!
Now this is experiencing Okanagan weather at its finest!Spring in the Okanagan...life is good!
