Osoyoos Desert Railroad

the osoyoos desert railroadThe Desert Railroad is a miniature fantasy world you have to see. It is located in the

South Okanagan town of Osoyoos in the interior of British Columbia Canada.

The whole family will be amazed and in awe of the whole scene that is laid out as you enter the room.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time here checking out the detailed landscaping and all the European towns and houses.

The 371 sq. m.(4000 sq ft.) of European Railroad with 2 kilometers (almost 1 1/4 mile) of railroad track makes this the largest Marklin lay-out in Canada.

Other features of the desert model railroad include:

  • Over 15,000 hand painted little people.

  • More than 1600 houses.

  • More than 30 computer controlled trains that wind their way through the entire European style lay-out.

  • The car system that runs on some of the roads is the only public display in North America that has this feature! It really is something to see.

Some visitors to the Desert Railroad have spent more than an hour looking through the details and scenery.

And the kids will just love it here! Some of the things to point out to them include the Zoo animals, an indoor swimming pool, a Ferris Wheel, a Smart Car Monster Truck and so much more.

Just one word of advice. The distance the desert model railroad is from the ground can be a problem for some young children to see.

You will have to hold your small child up to see the display as there is nothing for them to stand on for viewing.

The coolest thing is when the lights are turned off and you become part of a lit up night scene.

This was my favourite part as the Desert Railroad seemed to come alive with the lights in each display zeroing in on things I hadn't noticed in the "daylight".

    About The Owners

outside of the osoyoos desert railroadAs you enter the Desert Railroad you will be greeted by Ulla Pedersen. She and her husband Poul are the proud owners of this fascinating place.

Even before climbing the stairs to the model railroad room I was amazed at the intricate detail of hand painting little people Ulla was involved in.

Her arthritic hands worked magic as she was able to perfect her work of art.

She was so pleasant as she welcomed me in this room that also serves as a gift shop. Souvenirs, Kid's T-shirts, postcards, some Marklin train starter kits and more can be found here.

Poul works in the model railroad room and is a big help if you have any questions about the displays. He also produced the "night time" effect by dimming the lights.

Poul began the set up of his railroad in the mid-seventies in Denmark. The whole display has come along way since those days and they have more plans to add more to this railroad in the future.

You and I will be the one to benefit at each visit as we should see more fascinating displays as they continue to expand on an already wonderful world of a model railroad.

    Marklin Trains

To really appreciate this desert railroad is to know a little history of the Marklin trains.

  • The German company that makes the trains was founded in 1859.

  • They produced the first wind-up train in 1891.

  • They are best known today for their model railways.

  • Marklin defined the International standard for gauges or scale.

  • Today they manufacture and market their trains and accessories in Gauge 1, HO scale and Z scale.

  • They were among some of the first model railway companies to put out a digital train-control system (1984).

  • The older Marklin trains are highly sought after and big collectibles today.

  • Marklin produces mostly German model trains but do manufacture various other trains from around the world.

Train buffs will continue to search out for collectible Marklin trains and look forward to the latest in model train technology.
